Five tours will be offered Friday morning. Buses will leave from entrance of Madame Cadillac building at 9:30 and return by noon. Organic lunches may be pre-ordered to enjoy on your return. You might want to continue the tour conversation over lunch.
Tours are included in the conference registration fee, but you must pre-register for a tour. Tour space is limited and will be assigned on a first registered, first served basis. People who register on-site may go on a tour if space is available. Tours will also be part of the Youth Track offered on Friday.
Tour 1 – WARM Training Center
A Detroit based nonprofit started in 1981, WARM’s mission is to promote the development of resource efficient healthy homes and communities. As a State of Michigan Energy Demonstration Center, WARM has exhibits and materials related to green building, including renewable energy and energy and water–efficient appliances. A WARM staff member will give a tour and a brief overview of green building principles.
Tour 2 – Environmental Justice Tour
Rhonda Anderson, Environmental Justice Coordinator for Sierra Club Detroit, will take participants to sites that illustrate the negative environmental impacts on communities. Tour will also highlight community involvement to bring about positive change.
Tour 3 – An Urban Garden Tour
Lindsay Turpin from the Greening of Detroit and the Detroit Agricultural Network will showcase a variety of urban agricultural efforts in Detroit. This will include community gardens, individual efforts and CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)
Tour 4 - A Riverwalk Tour
The Detroit riverfront is being transformed into a walkable, people-and-other-species-friendly place. A representative from the Riverfront Conservancy will give this tour which includes the newly opened Dequindre Cut. Learn about the life of the river, the restoration project and what is next.
Tour 5 – Mudmats from Tires – Recycling Motown Style
Cass Community Social Services trains and employs people who are homeless to make attractive mudmats out of recycled tires. Come and see how they do it, and how they have put a dent in Detroit's unemployment rate as well as in the piles of abandoned tires that mar our landscape.
